Born in Ahwaz in Iran, Mehdi Saki grew up to the sound of Arabic lullabies from his native province, close to the border with Iraq. Dance and music were an escape from the turmoil of war around him. He studied dance and theatre in Tehran before gathering musicians of the independent scene around the contemporary folk project Kamakan. Drawing from music traditions of the south of Iran, Arabic and Persian heritage, animating songs drawn from classic and contemporary poetry, Kamakan has through the years taken multiple shapes with various musicians. In 2015 their first album quickly acquired classic status amongst young Iranians. A second couldn’t be published. Now Kamakan unfolds as a trio formed with Iranian composer Ava Rasti (bass, electronics) and French multi-instrumentalist Axel Moon (saz, rabab, electronics) from Ko Shin Moon.
